RWU Students Intern for Narragansett Bay Estuary Program, Contribute to Blue Economy
Three Roger Williams University students are interning with the Narragansett Bay Estuary Program, which is housed at RWU. The students contribute to protecting and improving the bay and surrounding watersheds, gain valuable real-world experience, and train to become the next generation of environmental leaders. Interns are senior Nathan Silveira, a Civil Engineering major from Bristol, R.I., who is studying how to create an environmentally friendly geotextile mesh made with soybeans (instead of conventional plastic) to minimize soil erosion; sophomore Mandi Greenhalgh, an Environmental Science major from Clinton, N.J., who is researching how the removal of a dam in Rhode Island will impact the local environment; and senior Michelle Kryl, an Environmental Engineering major from Westhampton Beach, N.Y., who is investigating how many and what types of microplastics are in Narragansett Bay.

RWU Engineering and Chemistry Students Research Microplastics in Narragansett Bay
Senior Michelle Kryl, an Environmental Engineering major from Westhampton Beach, N.Y., junior Ashlee Lewandoski, an Environmental Engineering major with minors in Mathematics and Sustainability Studies from Bristol, Conn., and Grace DiBlasio, a junior Chemistry major from North Andover, Mass., are part of a multi-year student research team, working to determine the volume and types of microplastics entering Narragansett Bay. Along with Lillian Jeznach, Associate Professor of Engineering at Roger Williams University, the students have been working on the long-term microplastic sampling campaign to develop a database of freshwater and atmospheric microplastic measurements in Rhode Island. Part of their work will also create sampling and analysis methods that are accessible to all Engineering undergraduate students in the program.

RWU Student Designs Robot to Study Molecular Longevity
Senior Colton Pelletier, a Biology and Applied Mathematics double major from Bristol, Conn., used his interdisciplinary education to construct a robot that documents the life span of rotifers, as part of Roger Williams University's Molecular Longevity Laboratory. Pelletier's robot, which he dubbed the Roti-bot, documents the life span of rotifers, a microscopic aquatic invertebrate that has a genome relatively similar to humans, making them ideal model organisms to study in relation to molecular longevity.
